2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 6 (Sept. 30-Oct. 6)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - A total of 10 UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the sixth week of the 2013-14 season.

Football

Offense: Cody Gerver, Wide Receiver, 6-4, 189, Junior, Mahtomedi, Minn.

Saturday at UW-Platteville, Gerver caught two passes for 19 yards, one of which was the Blugolds’ first touchdown of the game 13 minutes into the contest. The 15-yard touchdown reception gave quarterback Mark Munger his first collegiate touchdown pass.

Defense: Sean Graham, Linebacker, 6-0, 213, Senior, Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall

For the fourth time this season, Graham led the Blugolds in tackling as he finished with eight against UW-Platteville on Saturday. Graham had three solo tackles and five assists to bring his season total to 35, second most in the league.

Special Teams: Clint Larsen, Wide Receiver, 6-0, 193, Sophomore, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial

Larsen returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the third quarter against UW-Platteville on Saturday to help put the Blugolds up 27-21. He took the kick 98 yards, the Blugolds’ first kick return for a touchdown since Nov. 11, 1987, the longest in school history (previous long was 97 yards by Mike Zeihen in 1980), the third longest in NCAA Division III this season, and the sixth longest in conference history. Larsen also recorded three tackles on the special teams.


Women’s Tennis

Singles:  Katie Gillman, Senior, Red Wing, Minn.

Gillman won two No. 1 singles matches this weekend against conference opponents, helping the Blugolds to two victories. Against UW-Stevens Point on Friday, Gillman picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Rachel Brown and won 6-1, 6-0 against UW-Oshkosh’s Morgan Counts on Saturday. She is now 9-2 overall this season, 4-1 in conference play.

Doubles:  Katie Gillman, Senior, Red Wing, Minn. & Maddie Johnson, Junior, Lakeville, Minn./South

Gillman and Johnson won both No. 1 doubles matches this weekend, defeating their UW-Stevens Point opponents 8-6 on Friday while securing an 8-1 win over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. The pair is now 10-3 overall this year and has won seven straight matches.


Soccer

Offense:  Caroline Henderson, Forward, 5-5, Sophomore, Duluth, Minn./East

Playing just one game this week on Saturday, the Blugolds picked up a 3-2 overtime victory over UW-Stevens Point, giving Eau Claire its first conference win of the season. Henderson scored just 2:02 into overtime with a header to give the Blugolds the win. She also scored the Blugolds’ first goal of the game, unassisted at 21:44. Henderson led the game with six shots, four of which were on-goal.

Defense:  Megan Hanson, Defender, 5-9, Sophomore, Verona, Wis./Verona Area

Saturday in a 3-2 overtime win at UW-Stevens Point, Hanson and the rest of the Blugold defense allowed two goals with seven shots, six being on-goal. The win was the Blugolds’ first conference victory of the season.


Women’s Cross Country

Jami Riley, Senior, Fairmont, Minn.

Riley was the Blugolds’ second finisher Friday, placing 47th out of 424 runners to help Eau Claire to a sixth place finish out of 25 teams at the Blugold Invitational. She covered the 6,000-meter course in a time of 23:36.


Men’s Cross Country

Christian Leitner, Sophomore, Red Wing, Minn.

Leitner was the Blugolds’ number two runner Friday to help the team to a fourth place finish out of 26 teams at the Blugold Invitational. He finished in 18th place out of 453 runners with a personal record 8,000-meter time of 25:26.
