2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 2 (Sept. 2-8)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Seven UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the second week of the 2013-14 season.

Women’s Tennis

Singles: Renee Nelson, Junior, Madison, Wis./La Follette

Nelson was undefeated this weekend to help the Blugolds to two victories, an 8-1 win over Wartburg College (Iowa) and a 9-0 win over Lawrence University. Against Wartburg she fell in the opening set 6-3, but came back to claim the win with 6-3, 10-7 victories at No. 5 singles. Facing Lawrence in the No. 4 spot, she picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Doubles: Paige Kuepers, Sophomore, Green Bay, Wis./Southwest & Renee Nelson, Junior, Madison, Wis./La Follette

Kuepers and Nelson won two matches this weekend at No. 3 doubles, dropping just one game, to help the Blugolds to an 8-1 win over Wartburg College (Iowa) and a 9-0 win over Lawrence University. Facing Wartburg, the pair won 8-1 while winning 8-0 against Lawrence.


Soccer

Offense:  Tara Dennehy, Forward, 5-9, Sophomore, Eugene, Ore./Churchill

In two games this week, the Blugolds picked up a win and a tie to stay unbeaten on the season (2-0-1). Against Hamline University (Minn.) on Thursday, a game the Blugolds won 4-1, Dennehy scored the Blugolds’ final goal of the game at 75:02 after assisting on what proved to be the game-winner at 24:48. She tied for a team-high with two shots. Facing Augsburg College (Minn.) on Saturday, the Blugolds recorded a 1-1 double overtime tie. The tying goal for the Blugolds came with two seconds remaining in regulation.

Defense:  Nina Behrenbrinker, Goalkeeper, 5-9, Senior, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall

Behrenbrinker made some big saves in two games this week, playing 200 minutes in-goal and guiding the Blugolds to a 4-1 win over Hamline University (Minn.) on Wednesday and a 1-1 double overtime tie against Augsburg College (Minn.) on Saturday. Wednesday, she stopped two shots while making 10 saves on Saturday. Behrenbrinker is now 2-0-1 on the season.


Volleyball

Kelly Schuh, Outside Hitter, 5-10, Senior, Appleton, Wis./Hortonville

Competing in five matches this week, Schuh led the Blugolds in kills all five times as she reached double figures each time as the Blugolds went 2-3 on the week. For the week, she finished with 71 kills and a hitting percentage of .241. Her largest kill total and best hitting percentage came against No. 1-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Friday, recording 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .364. She also had 11 service aces, seven blocks assists and five set assists this week. Playing in four matches at the Augsburg College Invitational this weekend, she was named to the All-Tournament Team.


Women’s Golf

Kate Engler, Junior, Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner

Engler finished in second place to lead the Blugolds to a sixth place finish at the Wartburg College Invitational this weekend. She was tied for first after round one, shooting 74, and finished one stroke out of first place after shooting another 74 on the second day for a two-day total of 148.
