2013-14 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 1 (Aug. 26-Sept. 1)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Seven UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the first week of the 2013-14 season.

Women’s Tennis

Singles: Colleen McCullough, Sophomore, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo

McCollough didn’t drop a single game as she competed in the No. 4 spot against UW-Stout to open the 2013-14 season at home Saturday. Her 6-0, 6-0 victory helped lead the Blugolds to a 9-0 conference win.

Doubles: Mary Frassetto, Senior, Oshkosh, Wis./West & Madison Rossebo, Junior, Minnetonka, Minn.

The duo of Frassetto and Rossebo recorded an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles as the Blugolds opened the season with a 9-0 win over UW-Stout on Saturday.


Soccer

Offense:  Kara Ryan, Defender, 5-6, Senior, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong

Competing in their first game of the 2013 season, the Blugolds picked up a 3-0 win over Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.). Ryan scored the Blugolds’ third and final goal of the game with a header off a corner kick at 83:02.

Defense:  Allie Stone, Midfielder, 5-7, Senior, Madison, Wis./Verona Area

Recording a 3-0 shutout at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) to open the season on Friday, Stone had a dominant performance in the midfield winning 50/50’s to help the Blugolds to the win. As a team, the Blugolds gave up just eight shots, including only two on-goal.


Volleyball

Lauren Sutherland, Libero, 5-10, Senior, Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian

Opening the season at the Saint Benedict Labor Day Tournament, the Blugolds finished with a 2-2 record, winning once and losing once each day at the two-day event. Sutherland led the Blugolds in digs three times while also leading the team in service aces twice. Against Bethel University (Minn.) on Saturday morning, Sutherland finished with 22 digs and four services aces, her highest totals in a match for the weekend. Playing in 11 sets, she recorded 62 digs, seven set assists and six service aces. For her efforts, Sutherland was named to the All-Tournament Team.


Women’s Golf

Kate Engler, Junior, Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner

Engler led the Blugolds this weekend as the team opened the 2013-14 season hosting the 2013 Doug Georgianni Memorial Invitational. Engler finished with a two-round total of 160 strokes, tying for fourth place and leading her team to a fifth place finish overall.
