Football falls to No. 5 Whitewater

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire football team hosted No. 5 UW-Whitewater on Saturday, falling to the Warhawks by a score of 45-0.

UW-Whitewater jumped to an early lead, scoring twice in the first quarter for a 14-0 advantage.

After a Warhawk field goal on their first drive of the second quarter, the Blugold defense would shut down Whitewater for the rest of the quarter. On Whitewater's second drive, Brandon Rosado (So. – Beaver Dam, WI) recorded a sack for an eight-yard loss and on the next play, Sam Romanski (Jr. – Wausau, WI/East) and Daniel Chuchwar (Fr. – Chetek, WI/Chetek-Weyerhaeuser) combined for another sack to force a Warhawk punt. On their next possession, Sam Burzynski (So. – Stanley, WI/Stanley-Boyd) intercepted Cole Wilber's pass to give Eau Claire the ball at their own 43 but the Blugolds were unable to capitalize as the Warhawks took a 17-0 lead into the locker room.

Whitewater scored on their first two drives of the second half to increase their lead to 31-0. Eau Claire would tally their second takeaway on the next possession, this time Carmelo Rosado (So. – Beaver Dam, WI) would come away with the interception.

In the fourth, the Warhawks scored again to start the final quarter. After another punt by Brad Goetsch (So. – Schofield, WI/DC Everest), Darius Sims (Jr. – Chicago, IL/Hubbard) and Brandon Rosado combined for a sack and Romanski recorded another sack two plays later to force a Warhawk punt. Eau Claire's drive would end in another Goetsch punt and Whitewater would tally their last score of the day on the following drive.

Romanski and Brandon Rosado would each finish the day with six tackles and 1.5 sacks while Burzynski finished with a team-high eight tackles and an interception to lead the Blugold defense.

Offensively, Scott Procter (Sr. – Chicago, IL/Saint Rita of Cascia) completed 11 passes on 24 attempts and ran for 42 yards on 11 carries.

Goetsch finished the day with 10 punts, averaging 40.2 yards per punt.
