Blugold Football Falls to Nationally-Ranked Titans in Home Finale

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – While the UW-Eau Claire football team gave up 42 points through the first three quarters, the Blugolds were able to hold eighth-ranked UW-Oshkosh scoreless in the fourth quarter in a 42-14 loss on Senior Day at Carson Park today.

Oshkosh scored 35 points before halftime with three passing and two rushing touchdowns but the Blugolds came out stronger in the second half and outscored the Titans 14-7.

Down 42-0, the Blugolds used their first drive of the fourth quarter to find the end zone. Drew Davis (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) caught a seven-yard pass from Joel Newman (So.-Red Wing, Minn.) to cap the six-play, 58-yard drive to get the Blugolds on the board.

While Joel Sweeney (Sr.-Tomah, Wis.) had -2 yards rushing in the first half, he was able to finish with 123 on the day. He scored the other Blugold touchdown with eight minutes remaining in the game on a 50-yard run. He now has 996 rushing yards for the season.

The Blugolds finished the game with 210 yards of offense while Oshkosh had 410.

On defense, Cody Taubman (So.-New Richmond, Wis.) led Eau Claire with 14 tackles and one forced fumble while Jake Weber (Fr.-Durand, Wis.) had one fumble recovery. Erik Hulman (So.-Milwaukee, Wis./Lutheran) had one sack for a loss of eight yards.

Eau Claire drops to 1-8 on the season and 1-5 in the conference while the Titans improve to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in WIAC play.

The Blugolds will play at UW-La Crosse next Saturday for the final game of the season. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. and will be televised live on WQOW TV 18 in Eau Claire and WXOW TV 19 in La Crosse.
