Baseball Overpowers Dutchmen in 7 Inning Rout

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team were back on the baseball diamond at the 2022 Russmatt Invitational on Tuesday. After a thrilling victory on Monday against Trinity College (Conn.), the Blugolds dominated Union College (NY), 18-1, for their fourth win of the season.

For the fourth game in a row, Eau Claire got on the board first as Drew Salyers (Fr. – Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) hit in Diego Caicedo (Fr. – Pompano Beach, FL/Northeast) in the third for a 1-0 lead. The Blugolds piled on the runs on the top of the fourth as Will Girardi (Fr. – Mackinaw, IL/Dee-Mack) hit a sacrifice fly into right field to score Ryan Venne (So. – Eau Claire, WI/North) for a 3-0 lead. Caicedo, David Janssen (So. – Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial), and Otto Treichel (Jr. – Madison, WI/West) drove in four combined runs for six total runs in the 4th inning to increase the Blugold lead to 8-0.

Despite giving up a run in the sixth, UWEC hammered the total in the seventh as they took advantage of Union errors and walks to rattle off eight runs in the inning. Wylder Guido (Fr. – Downers Grove, IL/Nazareth Academy), Adam Marshall (Fr. – Rochester, MN/Mayo), and Chase Yaeger (So. – Black River Falls, WI) all batted in runs in conjunction with the unearned runs to seal the win for the Blugolds, 18-1.

In the batter's box, 12 different Blugolds recorded a hit as Scott Richards (So. - Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandberg) led the team with two hits on four at bats. Janssen and Yaeger both has two RBI's each.

Anthony Scimone (Fr. – Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) was credited with the victory in his first ever collegiate start as he pitched six innings and only allowed six hits and one run. Scimone collected five strikeouts and only waled three batters in his first start as a Blugold.

The Blugolds (4-4, WIAC 0-0) will continue their Spring Break trip on Wednesday with a morning game against Benedictine University (Ill.) at 10AM CST.
