Baseball Suffers First Loss of the Season to Carleton

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team was back on the road Thursday as they faced Carleton College (Minn.) at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN. After falling behind 4-1 in the fourth inning, the Blugolds couldn't find any late inning magic and fell, 10-2, to the Knights.

After three scoreless innings, Carleton struck first in the fourth with a single, a double, and a past ball to take a 4-0 lead. Nate Witte (So. – Woodbury, MN) and UWEC answered in the bottom of the fourth after a balk by the Carleton pitched advanced Witte to home.

Diego Caicedo (Fr. – Pompano Beach, FL) continued to chip away at the Knight's lead after scoring off a David Janssen (So. – Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) single in the fifth. Janssen led the Blugolds at the plate by going 2 for 4 with an RBI single and a double.

Carleton extended their lead in the sixth and seventh innings to 10-2 to serve Eau Claire their first loss of the season, 10-2.

Justin Coronado (Fr. – Humble, TX/Atascocita) pitched three and one third innings in his collegiate debut. Coronado allowed only three runs on three hits and tallied one strikeout. He is now 0-1 on the season.

The Blugolds will look to bounce back against another nonconference opponent on Sunday, March 13th. UWEC will face Augustana University (IL) in a doubleheader beginning at 11:30AM.
