Warhawks 3-0 in Border Brawl

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The UW-Whitewater wrestling team went 3-0 including wins against two ranked opponents Saturday in the annual Border Brawl Duals in Kachel Fieldhouse. The field featured 12 teams including four ranked by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and 22 individually ranked wrestlers. Competing teams included: #2 Concordia College-Moorhead, #3 UW-Whitewater, #9 Olivet, #18 Cornell, UW-Stevens Point, Elmhurst, North Central, UW-Oshkosh, Trine, UW-Eau Claire and Manchester.

The format for the tournament consists of three rounds of dual meets followed by the final round of dual meets that pin the winners of each pool against each other. A separate flight tournament will take place throughout the day on a designated mat.

UW-W opened with a 38-9 win over Elmhurst College. Trevor Pruett (West Bend/West Bend East) and top ranked Shane Siefert (Mundelein, IL/Carmel) highlighted the matchup with pins in their respective weight classes. Pruett registered his at 133 pounds in 3:36 while Siefert stopped the clock in 2:14 in the 197 pound bout. Cedric Gibson (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield North), ranked fifth, and eighth ranked Elroy Perkin (Greenfield/Whitnall) each recorded technical falls at 165 and 149 pounds respectively. Corey Meyer (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) and Ryan Aprahamian (Mukwonago/Mukwonago) added four points each to the Warhawk total with major decisions at 141 and 184 pounds.

The Warhawks met Cornell College in the second dual of the day. The referree raised the arm of a Warhawk wrestler in each of the first eight weight classes as UW-W took a 29-0 lead. Perkin pulled off an upset over seventh ranked Trevor Engle at 149 pounds. His 5-4 win gave the Warhawks a 13-0 lead. 

The final dual of the day was the most anticipated match of the competition pinning #2 (Concordia-Moorhead) against #3 (UW-W). Zac Denny (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) got things going for Whitewater with a 6-4 decision in the 125 pound weight class. Fourth ranked Jimmy Nehls (Downers Grove, IL/North) made it 6-0 in favor of the Warhawks with a 5-1 decision at 133 upsetting third ranked Jacoby Beregeron. Matt Adcock (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park), ranked sixth, held the momentum for UW-W with a 9-3 win in the 141 bout. Third ranked Jacob Long put Concordia-Moorhead on the board with a 10-6 decision over Whitewater's Perkin. Tenth rnaked Kyle LeDuc registered a tech fall to pull Concordia to within one, 9-8. Gibson answered with a 10-3 decision at 165 pounds but Sebastian Gardner responded at 174 to keep the margin at one, 12-11. Aprahamian gave the Warhawks some breathing room again in the 184 pound bout with a 5-1 decision. Siefert put the final touches on the upset win for UW-W with a technical fall, 18-2, over Concordia's Delson Saintal to seal the win for UW-W. The final score was 20-17.
