Slattery and Sullivan Named WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's cross country runner Samantha Slattery (Waunakee, Wis.), and women's soccer player Emily Sullivan (Medina, Minn/Wayzata) have each been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Slattery won the Augsburg University (Minn.) Invitational and helped the Blugolds to a fifth-place finish out of 24 teams finish on Sept. 15 at Hyland Greens Golf Course in Bloomington, Minn.  She ran a patient race, respecting the hilly terrain and the hot and humid conditions. Over the final kilometer, Slattery pulled away from the field of 312 runners to win by 15 seconds with a 6,000-meter time of 23:33.

Sullivan led the attack for UW-Eau Claire’s pair of victories during the week. She had a career night scoring four goals on six shots in UW-Eau Claire’s 5-0 victory over St. Norbert College (Wis.) on Sept. 12. Sullivan scored her fifth goal of the week on a long kick from 10 yards outside the box and just over the goalkeeper’s shoulder in the Blugolds’ 2-0 victory over College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) on Sept. 16. She scored five goals in 17 games last season, and matched that in her performance in two games during the week.

The women's cross country team will compete again on September 28th at the UWEC Blugold Invite hosted by Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis. Sullivan and the women's soccer team travel to Decorah, IA on Septermber 19th to take on Luther College.
