Essen and Wittig Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey player Courtney Wittig (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) and women's basketball player Katie Essen (Farmington, Minn./Rosemount) have each been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Wittig led the Blugolds with two goals in their 5-4 overtime win over UW-Superior on Nov. 10. She scored the first two goals for UW-Eau Claire, both in the second period - the first goal at the 1:52 mark and the second at the 3:03 mark. The women's hockey team in now 3-1-1 and will host UW-River Falls on November 17th at 2:00pm at Hobbs Ice Arena. 

Essen led the Blugolds in a 75-56 win at University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) on Nov. 10. She had a game-high 17 points, including 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Essen also chipped in with six rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot and one steal in the season-opening victory. The women's basketball team will host their tip-off tournament in Zorn Arena on November 16th and 17th. They will face Ripon College at 8:00pm on the 16th, and the College of St. Scholastica at 5:00pm on the 17th.
