Three Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Three UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Junior outside hitter Jessica Coyne (Verona, Wis.) was named offensive WIAC Athlete of the Week for volleyball. Coyne's hitting percentage was .333 during the week, including .560 in a victory over Augsburg University (Minn.) on Oct. 7. She racked up 53 kills, six block assists and nine digs and recorded double-digit kills in three of the four matches. In a home sweep of No. 17-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Oct. 4, she had eight kills, three block assists and three digs. On Oct. 6, Coyne hit .345 with 14 kills and four digs in a 3-0 sweep over Martin Luther College (Minn.). On Oct. 7, she had 15 kills in a five-set match with No. 15- ranked Millikin University (Ill.) and capped off the weekend with a career-high 16 kills  (only 2 errors) on 25 swings and added three block assists in a 3-0 win over Augsburg. Coyne was named to the Sandy Schumacher All-Tournament Team for her efforts.

Doubles duo Hannah Zevenbergen (Baldwin, Wis. / Baldwin-Woodville) and Molly Sanvik (Winona, Minn.) were named doubles WIAC Athletes of the Week for women's tennis. Sanvik and Zevenbergen defeated Maura Andersen and Tayler Garves of UW-La Crosse 8-4 at No. 3 doubles on Oct. 7. The win got the Blugolds on the board and set up a 5-4 comeback win. The pair are now 5-3 on the season in doubles play. 

The volleyball team will travel to UW-La Crosse on October 11, and will be on the road again at UW-Stevens Point on October 14. The women's tennis team will take on Bethel University and UW-Stevens Point at Steven's Point on October 14.
