Knapp and Lefaive Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Two UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Recognized this week were football wide receiver Matt Knapp (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) along with women's soccer goalie Sammie Lefaive (Jr- Coon Rapids, MN).

 Knapp hauled in six passes, scored three touchdowns and had 195 all-purpose yards in the Blugolds’ 40-14 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College on Sept. 24. His first touchdown came on a 9-yard pass to put the Blugolds up 15-0 in the first quarter. Knapp found the end zone again in the second quarter with a 49-yard reception. He scored his third touchdown of the day on a 19-yard reception late in the third quarter. Knapp averaged 18.3 yards per catch on the day.

Lefaive had a big week in goal for the Blugolds, earning a shutout win with two big saves against Hamline University (Minn.) on Sept. 20. She had three saves, including one very timely save in the second overtime in the Blugolds’ 1-1 tie with Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Sept. 22.

Blugold football will host UW-Stevens Point on Saturday October 1, at 1:00pm, while the soccer team will be at Dubuque Wednesday September 28.
