Four Blugolds named WIAC Athlete of the Week!

Madison, Wis. (Blugolds.com) -Four Blugolds were awarded with Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athlete of the Week honors this week as announced by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations, Matt Stanek. These athletes include men’s hockey player Jay Deo (Jr., Langley, British Columbia), Alex Mess (Sr., Lake Mills, Wis.) of the men’s track and field team, and from the women’s track and field team, Sarah Gladden (Jr., Greenville, Wis.) and Sam Anderson (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.).

Jay Deo, a UWEC goalie, saved 46 shots in the Blugolds’ 2-1 win over No. 3  UW- Stevens Point on Feb. 13. This led the team to an improved record of 15-5-5 on the season, earning UW- Eau Claire a share of the WIAC championship. The Pointers put 47 shots on goal compared to the Blugolds’ 16 and Deo’s 46 saves secured the victory.

Alex Mess won both the shot put and 35-pound weight throw at the men’s track and field showcase meet hosted by University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Feb. 12. He was victorious in both events for the second straight week. His marks from the St. Thomas meet (17.17m in shot put at 18.08m in the weight throw) have him ranked second and third in the nation, respectively.

Sarah Glidden also participated in the University of St. Thomas Showcase, placing third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.55, a personal best. This moves her to fifth on the NCAA Division III Honor Roll in the event. Gladden also won the long jump with a leap of 17-8 1/4 (5.39m). She is currently ranked in the top ten in five different events nationally.

Captain Sam Anderson finished second in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 57-5 (17.50m) at the University of St. Thomas Showcase. This throw moves her up to seventh on the NCAA Division III Honor Roll. Anderson also placed fourth in shot put with a throw of 40-11 (12.47m).

Both track teams are back in action on Saturday at the Pointer Big Dog Invite in Stevens Point, while the men’s hockey team has a rematch with the Pointers on Feb. 26-27 at Hobbs Ice Arena for the semifinal round of the WIAC Tournament.
