Johnson and Dale WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire womens basketball player Madison Johnson (Osceola, Wis.) and womens hockey player Paige Dale (Andover, Minn.) were both awarded with Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athlete of the Week honors as announced by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations, Matt Stanek.

Johnson, a Senior Forward on Eau Claire’s basketball team broke the school’s single-game scoring record against North Central College on Dec. 12. She scored 42 points in 30 minutes and ripped down 17 rebounds. The previous record was 36 points held by Vanessa Schley against UW-Oskshosh on Jan. 17, 2001. The 42 points matched the WIAC single-game mark set by UW-Plateville’s Stephanie Sullivan against UW-Oshkosh on Feb. 19, 1992. Johnson was 23-of-37 (62%) from the floor and 15-of-19 (79%) from the free-throw line for the week. She led the Blugolds in scoring and rebounding in both contests, averaging 30.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in the two games. The Blugolds came up two points shy of Luther College, 71-69, on Dec. 9, and defeated North Central 94-89.

Dale, a Junior Forward for Blugold hockey recorded her first natural hat trick against Bethel University (Minn.) on Dec. 12, scoring three goals on five shots. Bethel answered the Blugolds’ first goal to tie the game and Dale responded with three goals in seven minutes to end the first period. She helped the Blugolds notch two wins during the week, defeating Finlandia University (Mich.) 8-1 on Dec. 11, then beating Bethel 6-1.

The women’s basketball team continues their season on Dec. 19 at Coe College in Iowa, while the women’s hockey team goes up against Saint Mary’s (Minn.) on Jan. 1.
